What is this project?

We are on the threshold of a groundbreaking economic transition. AGI systems are poised to completely reshape how humans engage with labor, and have the potential to soon substitute for humans in nearly all cognitive tasks. This shift will have massive economic benefits, but there will also be serious negative externalities — massive labor displacement, skyrocketing wealth inequality, and downward social mobility.

Societies need more thoughtful perspectives and alignment on these topics. We need a clear vision for how governments should respond to the widespread impact of AI systems on the economy. In short, we need a new social contract.

Our theory of change is that this set of research will start the international conversation around plausible structural improvements, and lead to greater expert consensus on the role of governments in a transformed economy.

To kickstart the societal discussion on these topics, we are publishing an anthology of short articles from leading experts proposing concrete policies and strategies to guide the role of governments during the upcoming economic transformation due to AI systems.

Current contributors include: Anton Korinek, Deger Turan (CEO of Metaculus), Steve Omohundro, Iason Gabriel (DeepMind), Julian Jacobs (DeepMind), Sam Manning (GovAI), Dylan Hadfield (MIT), Seth Lazar (ANU), Peter Salib (UH), Colleen McKenzie (AOI), Philip Tomei (AOI), Dean Ball (Hyperdimensional), Justin Bullock (ARI).
